Hydration is Key!!!

Don’t Forget to Hydrate!


Summer is in full swing and the hot sunny days we have been longing for are finally upon us! Whether you're catching some vitamin D at the beach, trapped in the office, training for a 10k, or working out at Surfset LI the most essential nutrient is water! Water helps maintain proper body temperature and is necessary for all digestive, circulatory, and excretory functions.  Make sure you begin any exercise well hydrated; drinking plenty of water before, during and after working out.  Water helps transport key nutrients to give you energy and keep you performing at your highest level. You need to replenish all water lost through perspiration and staying hydrated is essential in building muscle, increasing tone and weight loss.


So, next time you're gaining muscle in a build class, improving your core and flexibility in a balance class, or sweating it all out in a blend class remember hydration is key!  Not sure your drinking enough? Well, your body will let you know- fatigue is the first sign of dehydration along side muscle cramps and headaches.  Even if you have no time to squeeze in a sweat session water is still critical in everyday functions such as digestion, absorption, and circulation.  So make sure you drink plenty of fluids, especially in this extreme summer heat and while working out.


Ways to Stay Hydrated:

- Drink water

- Drink coconut water, fruit infused water,seltzer, smoothies, decaffeinated tea, or sports drinks after high intensity workout lasting more than an hour 

- Eat foods with high water content; melons, kiwi, citrus fruit, apples, strawberries, celery, cucumbers, carrot, broccoli, spinach, tomatoes, iceberg lettuce, bell peppers

- Limit alcohol and coffee intake
